Doujinshi commentary: Tropical Punch

Circle:    Sakana Nekono & Megriy's Factory    Tropical Punch: Front Cover
Type:   Normal, gag doujinshi. 30 pages.
Date:   2003/05

The circles & artists in this one are Danchipetkinshirei (Sakana Nekono) and Hazuki Miina (Megriy's Factory). Since both circle and artist names are so prominent on the covers and inside pages, and since I've listed Sakana Nekono's publications under that name on the rest of this site, I'm just putting all the information right here.

In the first gag in this doujinshi Zidane is cheerfully wearing the Hawaiian outfit, including straw hat, aloha shirt, and lei. Garnet points out that they are useless as far as armor, stats, or abilities go, thus letting the air out of Zidane's balloon. However, the Black Mages appreciate Zidane's fashion statement. In another esoteric gameplay gag, Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, and Quina wait with a chocobo on a beach... and wait... and their health and magic is eventually restored. (If you visit every beach on the worldmap on a chocobo, this will happen.) There are other gags involving lesser-used members of the cast, for example two children bringing a Garnet doll to Zidane instead of a trick sparrow's wing, and Salamander shaking Lowell down. In fact, there's a fair bit of Salamander in this doujinshi, in both artists' works. Cid (both human and bug forms), Hilda, Kuja, and a woman who looks as though she could be related to Lulu from FFX also get a fair bit of screen time. Er, page space.

All in all, this is a fun doujinshi. The two artists' styles are quite different, but they're compatible. The artwork is pleasant, and it's good to see some of the often-ignored characters get their moment in the spotlight - even if it does involve getting beaten up by someone with dreadlocks and a chip on his shoulder.
